Drowsy driving is a growing problem in the US. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 16.5% of all fatal traffic accidents are caused by drowsy drivers. Interestingly, high rates of drowsy-driving fatalities don’t just happen in population-dense areas of the US.

This illustrates how wide-spread the problem has become on a national scale. It is interesting to see how some states, such as Texas and California, are home to the overwhelming majority of counties represented, while the eastern seaboard is largely absent. Sleep deprivation is a major cause of motor vehicle accidents, and studies have shown it can impair the human brain similarly to alcohol consumption.
